Divorce and Remarriage
In this challenging passage, the Pharisees ask Jesus to pick sides in a well-known debate: "Is a man allowed to divorce his wife for any and every reason?" Though He eventually answers the question in the negative, Jesus spends the majority of the passage correcting our false understanding of marriage. Marriage is not a legal contract to sign today and dissolve tomorrow. It's a new creation by God, Himself. Therefore, divorce inflicts serious pain and damage on all involved. Though it is allowed by God in narrowly defined situations, we should do absolutely everything we can to ensure that our marriages last a lifetime.
