“What Makes God Angry”

Romans 1:18-32

Before we can truly appreciate the good news of Jesus Christ, we must come to terms with God's wrath against our sin.

“Remember, do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness; from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you arrived at this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord.”

—Deuteronomy 9:7

“As I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest.’”

—Hebrews 3:11

“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

—John 3:36

I.    Mankind Disregarded God’s Revelation (18-21).

“The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the bother of existing?”

—Stephen Hawking

“The whole history of science has been the gradual realization that events do not happen in an arbitrary manner, but that they reflect a certain underlying order, which may or may not be divinely inspired.”

—Stephen Hawking

II.  Mankind Chose Idolatry (22-23).

Surely he cuts cedars for himself, and takes a cypress or an oak and raises it for himself among the trees of the forest. He plants a fir, and the rain makes it grow. Then it becomes something for a man to burn, so he takes one of them and warms himself; he also makes a fire to bake bread.

He also makes a god and worships it; he makes it a graven image and falls down before it. Half of it he burns in the fire; over this half he eats meat as he roasts a roast and is satisfied. He also warms himself and says, “Aha! I am warm, I have seen the fire.” But the rest of it he makes into a god, his graven image. He falls down before it and worships; he also prays to it and says, “Deliver me, for you are my god.”

—Isaiah 44:14-17

III. God Handed Humanity Over to Sin (24-32).
