“Worship With Your Wallet”
Proverbs
The way we handle
money is a reflection of our walk with God.
I. Money Is Not Everything
How blessed is the man who finds wisdom And the man who gains understanding. For her profit is better than the profit of silver And her gain better than fine gold. She is more precious than jewels; And nothing you desire compares with her.
—Proverbs 3:13-15
Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, But righteousness delivers from death.
—Proverbs 11:4
A good name is to be more desired than great wealth, Favor is better than silver and gold.
—Proverbs 22:1
Two things I asked of You, Do not refuse me before I die: Keep deception and lies far from me, Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is my portion, That I not be full and deny You and say, “Who is the Lord?” Or that I not be in want and steal, And profane the name of my God.
—Proverbs 30:7-9
II. It Matters How You Obtain It
• Debt
The rich rules over the poor, And the borrower becomes the lender’s slave.
—Proverbs 22:7
• Get-rich-quick schemes
A faithful man will abound with blessings, But he who makes haste to be rich will not go unpunished.
—Proverbs 28:20
• Deception
Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles, But the one who gathers by labor increases it.
—Proverbs 13:11
• Oppression
He who oppresses the poor to make more for himself Or who gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.
—Proverbs 22:16
• The Blessing of God
It is the blessing of the Lord that makes rich, And He adds no sorrow to it.
—Proverbs 10:22
III. It Matters How You Spend It
• Extravagance
He who loves pleasure will become a poor man; He who loves wine and oil will not become rich.
—Proverbs 21:17
• Generosity
The generous man will be prosperous, And he who waters will himself be watered. He who withholds grain, the people will curse him, But blessing will be on the head of him who sells it.
—Proverbs 11:25-26
IV. It Only Lasts a Little While
Do not weary yourself to gain wealth, Cease from your consideration of it. When you set your eyes on it, it is gone. For wealth certainly makes itself wings Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.
—Proverbs 23:4-5
