“Jesus is the Good Shepherd”
John 10:1-21
Jesus is the GOOD SHEPHERD who calls, provides for and protects His Own sheep.

Shepherding 101
What are sheep like?
All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.

Sheep need a shepherd!
Old Testament “Sheep & Shepherd” References:
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

So we Your people and the sheep of Your pasture will give thanks to You forever; to all generations we will tell of Your praise.

For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand.

Who is our Shepherd?
Jesus is the Good Shepherd (John 10:11,14)
Jesus is the Great Shepherd (Heb. 13:20)
Jesus is the Chief Shepherd (1 Peter 5:4)
I. He calls His own sheep by name (10:1-6)
Beware of the Evil Shepherds
“Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of My pasture!” declares the Lord.
—Jeremiah 23:1
Thus says the Lord God, “Woe, shepherds of Israel who have been feeding themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flock?”
—Ezekiel 34:1-2
Jesus is calling…
1. Pharisees to repent and follow Messiah
2. His sheep to follow the Good Shepherd
II. He provides life abundantly (10:7-10)
“I am the door”
To eternal life (Jn. 14:6)
To sustenance & pasture (Ps. 23)
To abundant life (Jn. 10:10)
III. He protects His own flock (11-21)
We are to allow the good Shepherd to live His life through us…
▫ Elders- “Shepherd the flock of God”
▫ Pastors- shepherding image
▫ Leaders- care for, nurture, admonish, feed
▫ Parents- shepherd our children
He is “good”
He is THE Good Shepherd
He sacrifices His own life
His sheep are eternally secure
And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
